Several years ago, I realized life was not about separating work and play, but instead about ensuring a surplus of energy at all times.
Rather than worrying about how I could recoup this energy from things I do after work, I focused on how to take good care of myself at work (virtual or physical).
To remind me where to focus my attention during the workday and how to regenerate, I compiled the following list.
As some of you may find it useful, I am sharing it with you.
1. You shouldn't try to save the world after 5 pm, and the Slack environment should be kept clean.
2. Position yourself differently throughout the day.
When I have a conference call to brainstorm a project, I stand, walk, but sit in the armchair.
3. Balance shouldn't be your goal.
My belief is that finding balance in life doesn't have any positive effects.
In life, one should keep everything in check, but I don't find this approach to be effective.
Sometimes I neglect other areas in order to achieve extraordinary results in one specific area. My "out of balance" state does not last forever but can last for days or weeks.
4. Knowing your nervous system is crucial to understanding how many stimuli we can handle and how quickly our brain processes information.
Extraversion and introversion are both related to this.
Understanding your needs and reactions can help you decide when to stop or when to keep going.
5. Remind yourself that you need to regenerate; it's a sign of strength to take care of yourself under adverse circumstances.
Without taking care of yourself, you cannot take care of others or the business.
Plan breaks for regeneration and rest (walks, meditation, whatever works for you) if you have a packed agenda.
Being respectful is also an important factor when blocking time slots.
6. You should reorganize your calendar (either for one day or for the entire week) - cancel meetings that can be accomplished via email, record audio/video, and work asynchronously with others if you can.
Make sure you ask what role you should play in a forum before attending.
There is no need for the call if none or not defined. You might consider taking some of them outside.
7. It's probably the most controversial suggestion to just sit down and do nothing (or go for a walk).
Doing nothing is sometimes more productive than doing something. Getting ideas and hearing our thoughts will happen when we do nothing.
You get great ideas when you take a long bath or a long shower; it's the same thing.
8. Gather your thoughts, which can be combined with the previous step.
Take note of every action, thought, and idea you have.
By clearing your mind, you can finally see and take care of all the things that are vying for your attention. It's likely you'll have a better understanding of the next step.
9. Schedule time slots for deep work - "activities carried out in a state of distraction-free concentration that stretch the limits of your brain."
This can be interpreted as creating something new and non-recurring work.
The work involved here employs single-threading and a deep, uninterrupted state of focus.
There should be no Slack messages, e-mails, hovering over your phone, or listening to a podcast while you are uninterrupted.
10. Don't be afraid to say 'no' more often than 'yes.'
It is more rewarding to perform quality work than to juggle ten different tasks that deliver mostly mediocre results.
Saying 'no' to certain things is really saying 'yes' to others (like focus time, self-care, family time, achieving your own goals, etc.).
Being assertive is not easy sometimes because we don't want to miss out on opportunities.
On top of that, we often neglect to advocate for those who we are the only ones who can help.
11. Maintain a regular time for self-reflection.
Watch, iterate, identify action points, set measurable goals, and conduct experiments that will make you more satisfied with the time you spend on the job.
12. Participate in and contribute to the work communities that provide you with joy and growth opportunities.
It's great to be comfortable and unafraid of saying or doing something stupid there, so you can relax while developing.
Establish relationships there. Meetings or conversations with members of that group can provide a respite from daily responsibilities.

Several years ago, I realized life was not about separating work and play, but instead about ensuring a surplus of energy at all times.
Rather than worrying about how I could recoup this energy from things I do after work, I focused on how to take good care of myself at work (virtual or physical).
To remind me where to focus my attention during the workday and how to regenerate, I compiled the following list.
As some of you may find it useful, I am sharing it with you.
1. You shouldn't try to save the world after 5 pm, and the Slack environment should be kept clean.
2. Position yourself differently throughout the day.
When I have a conference call to brainstorm a project, I stand, walk, but sit in the armchair.
3. Balance shouldn't be your goal.
My belief is that finding balance in life doesn't have any positive effects.
In life, one should keep everything in check, but I don't find this approach to be effective.
Sometimes I neglect other areas in order to achieve extraordinary results in one specific area. My "out of balance" state does not last forever but can last for days or weeks.
4. Knowing your nervous system is crucial to understanding how many stimuli we can handle and how quickly our brain processes information.
Extraversion and introversion are both related to this.
Understanding your needs and reactions can help you decide when to stop or when to keep going.
5. Remind yourself that you need to regenerate; it's a sign of strength to take care of yourself under adverse circumstances.
Without taking care of yourself, you cannot take care of others or the business.
Plan breaks for regeneration and rest (walks, meditation, whatever works for you) if you have a packed agenda.
Being respectful is also an important factor when blocking time slots.
6. You should reorganize your calendar (either for one day or for the entire week) - cancel meetings that can be accomplished via email, record audio/video, and work asynchronously with others if you can.
Make sure you ask what role you should play in a forum before attending.
There is no need for the call if none or not defined. You might consider taking some of them outside.
7. It's probably the most controversial suggestion to just sit down and do nothing (or go for a walk).
Doing nothing is sometimes more productive than doing something. Getting ideas and hearing our thoughts will happen when we do nothing.
You get great ideas when you take a long bath or a long shower; it's the same thing.
8. Gather your thoughts, which can be combined with the previous step.
Take note of every action, thought, and idea you have.
By clearing your mind, you can finally see and take care of all the things that are vying for your attention. It's likely you'll have a better understanding of the next step.
9. Schedule time slots for deep work - "activities carried out in a state of distraction-free concentration that stretch the limits of your brain."
This can be interpreted as creating something new and non-recurring work.
The work involved here employs single-threading and a deep, uninterrupted state of focus.
There should be no Slack messages, e-mails, hovering over your phone, or listening to a podcast while you are uninterrupted.
10. Don't be afraid to say 'no' more often than 'yes.'
It is more rewarding to perform quality work than to juggle ten different tasks that deliver mostly mediocre results.
Saying 'no' to certain things is really saying 'yes' to others (like focus time, self-care, family time, achieving your own goals, etc.).
Being assertive is not easy sometimes because we don't want to miss out on opportunities.
On top of that, we often neglect to advocate for those who we are the only ones who can help.
11. Maintain a regular time for self-reflection.
Watch, iterate, identify action points, set measurable goals, and conduct experiments that will make you more satisfied with the time you spend on the job.
12. Participate in and contribute to the work communities that provide you with joy and growth opportunities.
It's great to be comfortable and unafraid of saying or doing something stupid there, so you can relax while developing.
Establish relationships there. Meetings or conversations with members of that group can provide a respite from daily responsibilities.
