A Better Way to Build Your Global Tech Team
When you're building your tech team, you’re faced with a choice: try your luck with offshore freelancers, or partner with a staff augmentation specialist like Cloud Employee.
Let's look at what this means for your business - and your peace of mind.
The Real Problems with Traditional Offshore Contractors
You've likely considered hiring freelancers. The rates look good, and platforms promise instant access to global talent. But here's what really happens when you work with solo offshore contractors...
The Productivity Problem
Remote work setup challenges are real. Even with good intentions, contractors face home distractions, split attention between multiple clients, and infrastructure issues. When you need them to focus on your urgent task, they're deep in someone else's project - creating bottlenecks and delays.
Weather and infrastructure problems hit hard too. When storms or power outages strike (common in many offshore locations), your freelancer's basic home setup can't cope. Without backup power or alternative internet, your work stops completely.
The Disappearing Act
Here's a story we hear often: Your project hits a critical deadline. You message your developer... silence follows. Days pass. Finally, you get word - their computer crashed, your files are gone, and they need to start over. Or worse, they've vanished completely, taking your code and data with them. This isn't rare - it's a regular risk.
Communication Chaos
Daily standups become exercises in frustration. Webcams mysteriously fail, developers say yes to impossible requests, and you spend hours decoding messages to figure out if requirements were understood. Critical issues get lost in translation, wasting precious development time. Your day suddenly disappears, because you’re:
- Chasing updates on basic tasks
- Double-checking work that should be right first time
- Coordinating across multiple time zones
- Rewriting ignored specifications
- Explaining the same concepts repeatedly
Quality Control Complications
With freelancers, quality remains uncertain. Strong technical test performance doesn't guarantee good code delivery. Portfolio projects can't be verified. You're stuck between blindly trusting their work or checking every line of code, and that’s time you can't spare.
The True Cost of Cheap Rates
Those attractive hourly rates hide mounting expenses:
- Time spent hiring and vetting
- Lost productivity from poor communication
- Delays from unreliable infrastructure
- Security risk management
- Technical debt from inconsistent coding
- Starting over when contractors disappear
